I Got Dibs on the T-Shirt Line

Neighbor takes in needy woman, talks marriage, then kills her
When Lisa Salisbury was evicted from a nearby trailer park, Tony Eugene Phillips invited her to live in his house with him, his mother and his two children.

"I was raised to help people out when I could," said Phillips, a construction worker who lived on Bush Street near Ensley.

He and Salisbury eventually became lovers. Then he killed her.

Nasty business, locally. First rule of thumb? If you're a cavalier, murderous BAStard, DON'T take the stand in your own defense. Especially against a lady prosecutor. I've met her. I don't think she has a sense of irony, less mind humor.
...Because he wanted her body to sink quickly, Phillips said he tried to cut off her head with a keyhole saw often used to cut Sheetrock.

That effort failed, but her body sank eventually, and he went home to bed.

...Sounding almost cavalier, he explained why he washed the saw before going to work after he killed Salisbury:

"You don't want to get blood on Sheetrock."

Kind of reminds me of the guy who robbed a woman, then acted as his own lawyer at trial. On cross-examination, he tried to get her to admit that she couldn't positively identify him as her attacker. After she answered that he definitely was the one who robbed her, he said (out loud, in court), "I should have killed you when I had the chance."

Good advice, you do not want to get blood on sheet-rock.

From my own experience, the absolute only time it ever even MIGHT make sense for a defendant to take the stand in a criminal case is if 1) they're arguing self-defense and 2) they're more sympathetic than the victim. And even then it's a close call.
