The Student Senate at the University of Washington

Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."
...SUCKS. That would not be just any Marine she's referring to, but a wild eyed Navy Cross AND Medal of Honor winner, who also spent 20 months as a Japanese prisoner of war. When I met him, he was a cranky old drunk who could still tell stories like nobody's business. But it wouldn't have mattered if he was a deaf mute, because you were just stunned speechless to be in his presence. And when word would get out that he was at the squadron next door (He spent a lot of time dropping in on them in the early 80's ~ old Marine Corps pilots always come back if they can.), there was a mad scramble out the hangar doors to get a glimpse, damn ~ maybe even have a chance to wave at him as he left. And we envied the hell out of those lucky sonsa bitches. They had a legend who came callin' ~ their very own Marine Corps warrior god. How cool was THAT?

VMA-214 had A-4's then, but they were still Pappy's outfit, still "The Black Sheep". And that's the Marine Miss Edwards is referring to in her objection ~ Pappy Boyington.

UPDATE: A Swilling Public Safety Announcement , occasioned by comments on The Jawa Report.

To stoopid, overindulged little college girls,

In this day and age, should you choose to stand forth at a public meeting, spout utter and complete nonsense causing pain and outrage to a fair sampling of the Blogosphere, at least have the grain of common sense to remove all your personal information from your LiveJournal site prior to your opening that blackhole of an orifice. When people snoop for info about the author of such inflammatory rhetoric ~ is she a radical genius, a deep thinker, another Beat Generation poet ~ they find your telephone number and address (besides exposing how vacuous your cranial cavity truly is). That is hugely dangerous in any case, you pretentious twit. What if it had been the Fat Sucker from the X-Files looking for you instead of middle aged, conservative bloggers?! So quit with the narcissistic, braindead LiveJournal entries ~ no one could give a rat's a$$ except other Valley Girls ~ and shut the flock up, already.

Well, we'll see how this plays out. How about this quote from your link though:

"Smith, according to the minutes, said "the resolution should commend Colonel Boyington's service, not his killing of others."

(sigh) Um, Lad Smith? The killing of others was a huge part of his service. It was a war against fascists and true imperialists. We sent him into it to achieve objectives and to do so....he needed to kill. This is duh 101.

Oh, I get it! You really mean to damn FDR for sending such men, to do such things.

That will get you far.

The more of life I see, the more I root for Colonel Jessup.

So let us commemorate Pappy Boyington's service....and note that (regrettable as it is) his efforts to defeat fascism, oppression and genocide did involve killing a bunch of nip aviators. We wish he could have found some way around it, but he just couldn't.

Everytime I hear people like this I am left thinking..."did I REALLY serve to protect THIS person?".

It is no wonder this country is turning into a liberal cespool of idiotic lunacy! Just look at what is going on at our colleges! I spent 6 1/2 years of my life defending the right of people like these stupid, brainless, student-government types to be just that. Still, I wince everytime the reality of it hits home.
