Not An Answer to Cartoon Critique

..."not a religious tract, and it is certainly not meant to criticize any group, religious or otherwise."
...but to Opus Dei's concern about "The DaVinci Code". Now, everyone knows "Code" is a cheap, discredited slap at the Catholic Church, no matter what disingenuous, pablumatic panderings spring forth from the movie company. But these guys aren't even organizing a boycott, less mind threatening producers with "cake or death" or torching Sony headquarters.

Them and us.

Actually, I thought Da Vinci Code was pretty evenhanded with the church, even with the Opus Dei sect. It criticized the sect's practices but treated its characters as basically good people (even Silas was treated as horribly misled in what he thought was the interest of the church).

And notice which character it was that actually attributed evil intentions to the modern church.

Dale Brown actually believes all the stuff that's in the thing ~ that's the worrisome part. He's at the point now where he refuses to call it fiction. Now, I haven't read it, BUT his use of thoroughly discredited material was enough for the Discovery Channel to completely debunk it publicly. I believe if it didn't have a cult-like following who believes every word, no one would have a problem with it. Far worse things have been written in the name of 'fiction'.

I read it, and it is very anti-catholic church.

And I'm a presbyterian, fwiw.

I still don't see it, B. Aside from the underlying theme (which would undercut all Christian religion, not specifically Catholicism) notice again which character is attributing the evil motives to the church. Notice also where all of the evil deeds in the story originated. Even the Opus Dei fundies are ultimately shown to be decent, if a bit unusual in their practices.

But granted, it takes a long, long time for that part to show up.

Yes, it has been pretty well debunked. But it feeds all the conspiracy theory folks what they like to read.

It is rather scary to think that Brown actually believes the stuff, though. I mean, it's a great read and all but...

And they reference the FICTION book to prove their whacko stuff ~ one lovely circle.

Isn't it though? For the special, he wouldn't even speak to Discovery.

Sorry I'm late, I was out choking Tom Hanks with my rosaries. What's the topic?

I didn't like the book that much, was expecting much more because of all the hype. Do understand why the Catholics are a little annoyed. Opus Dei did make a little movies showing they're quite as crazy as the movie makes them out to be. One of the local priests said read it if you want, he did, it's fiction and not very good fiction.
