God Forbid Someone Mentions

...the paucity of white athletes in certain sports, like Bryant Gumbel feels free to do about blacks in the Winter Olympics. They'd crucify him.

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

"GOP convention". Hmmm. I guess the lack of a Jamaican/Haitian/Honduran bobsled team ~ there's only a lily white granny representing islands of any description this year ~ is Bush's fault, too.

Fuck Bryant Gumbel.

"...try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing."

Or basketball, tennis, tae kwon do, "synchronized swimming," "modern pentathalon" or, well, most of the sports in the Summer games, you dumbass.

"Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won..."

You mean, exactly like gymnastics, which is in the Summer games? As others have said, I don't think something is really a "sport" if there's subjective judging involved, but saying that is NOT meant, at all, as a slight to those athletes who compete in such events. Calling them "pseudo-athletes" is a deliberate insult: is Gumbel actually saying figure skaters or gymnasts don't have atheltic ability? Then I'd like to see HIM try to land a triple axel.

I'd like to see him hit a curveball, for that matter, Dave.

Meanwhile, I'm out here wracking my brain for the names of all those black Swedes and Finns who got left off their hockey teams... For that matter, how many black Greeks ran track and field back when Aeschylus did play-by-play?

I think we should use Bryant Gumbel as a hockey puck. Yeah, that works for me.

Jeez, what a prick.

Posted by: Donnah at February 16, 2006 01:30 PM

back when Aeschylus did play-by-play?

hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha

dare I say...a classic?

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 16, 2006 01:57 PM

Although I must point out that Aeschylus did play-by-play-by-play.

Aristophanes did the color commentary...

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 16, 2006 02:10 PM

Bingley, we now refer to it as "commentary of color".

Besides, Aristophenes is ridiculous.

How many African countries have a tradition of snow sports? How many European countries have a tradition of snow sports? The idiot Gumbel is, well, an idiot.
