At Least We Can Still Celebrate Here

...unlike the state next door.

Bill would end keg parties in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Keg beer parties may soon come become illegal in Alabama because of problems with underage drinking, and it will be with the support of the beer industry.

The Alabama Senate voted 30-0 Tuesday for legislation that would ban the sale of draft beer in kegs of five gallons or more to individuals. The legislation would still permit draft beer to be sold in restaurants and bars in the 24 counties where it's legal.

I went to a small catholic university in northern Indiana. At that time they made a similar ruling, no kegs allowed on campus, and for the same pathetic reasoning. They thought that kegs encouraged drunkenness.

Of course, all we did was buy a lot of quarts of beer. It's a stupid idea, and it won't work. It will only serve to make the kids feel even more rebellious by making them think they're so clever to get around the intent of the rules, and will make life harder for people throwing wedding parties.

(Oh, please ~ "small Catholic University". ::SNORT::)

Or Marines throwing squadron picnics.

Mike - you went to Podunk - er Purdue? ;-)

The bill, which now goes to the House for consideration, was supported by the Alabama Wholesale Beer Association.

"We want to make sure the people who use our products are of age and use it responsibly," Executive Director Donna Alexander said.

What a pile of poop. This has nothing to do with underage drinking and everything to do with sales taxes. The state stands to make a heck of a lot more money by making folks buy beer in small packages.

As do the distributers. Ounce for ounce, the price of a keg, versus the price of a quart?

Exactly.

...it will be with the support of the beer industry.

Of course the industry supports it - free government price manipulation -- and for the good.

Remember kids, when buying your beer, one 15.5 gallon keg is the equivalent of 6.89 cases.

And when you pay for those pints in a bar? Lots of money for the tax man.

Print this math fact wallet-size for easy reference during those purchasing decisions.

Even I, who did not have a beer in a bar until of legal age, know this to be nitwittery. The solution to underage drinking is to enforce the law. And maybe if the law itself were more sensible (drinking age = 18) and encouraged responsibility, the problem wouldn't need a blunt-force approach like state law.

Purdue is hardly a catholic school!

I meant Notre Dame.

I thought Purdue was a type of chicken?

I know you meant ND, but given the rivalries in that state, I thought I'd pull your chain a little. Besides, there are an awful lot of Catholics at Podunk. I also went to college in IN, but as you can tell, not at Purdue.

Bwahahaha, John! Those are the EXACT words I used in an email to Mike...WHOOPS! Cat's out the bag {8^P
