Our Mayor Noggin Quote of the Day

Mayor Ray Nagin is weighing in on the matter. He wants to know "How do I ensure that New Orleans is not overrun by Mexican workers?"
Hoards of MEXICANS?! God forbid. (That sounds ~ dare I say ~ vaguely RACIST.) I dunno. Ask California or Arizona how they handle it. Can you imagine? It seems no one wants to come back to scrape the streets clean. (And I suppose ChimpBushy McHitler will be responsible for all the Juans and Josés who come in to do the dirty jobs the locals won't come home for.)
But interviews with some Katrina refugees suggest New Orleanians are in no big hurry to return for these jobs. In fact, many Katrina refugees have been landing jobs in communities around the country.
Go figure. UPDATE: A little more in depth from MSNBC.
Despite the mayor’s attempts to bring them home, New Orleans has become a closely-watched experiment in what happens when an entire income bracket disappears.

“If they can’t bring back these people, you’re going to see the city’s infrastructure fall apart,” says Dr. Robert Blendon of the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Hell, would you want that man to be your mayor?

Nope, probably stay exactly where I'd landed, all things considered. But he is only mayor until February. Although, in NOLA, what you get 'instead of' or 'anybody but' often is the exact same thing.

...has Nagin been hangin' W/ Marion Berry?

'Cause he looks pretty well baked in that photo.

It *would* explain a lot.

I bet the Mexicans are mobile enough to get the hell out of Dodge when a big-ass hurricane is heading straight for them.

"Bitch set me up" -- Mayor Marion Berry

Now, quit talkin' BAD about him, or he'll send the three New Orleans cops left to rough you up.

He does better locally than he does nationally. Although the gambling proposal he just floated doesn't do much for me, I really have no major issues with the man. He could have done a little better before and after Katrina but there's a pretty long line of public officials in that column. Not a good time to be a public official in Louisiana. The only people who really stepped up to the plate in our dark hours were our family, friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens. I'll take that over the usual hot air any day.

Oh Rob, YOU are a nice guy. But my cruel heart hopes they ALL get shown the door, in a BIG way.

Blanco is vulnerable but that will depend on the quality of her opposition and what happens between now and 2007. Nagin is a lock unless population demographics in New Orleans change considerably. Not out of the realm but very unlikely.
