What Will Quarterbacks Do Now?

If the FDA takes their candy of choice away?

(CNN) -- A government advisory panel voted Tuesday to recommend eliminating prescription drugs that combine acetaminophen with narcotics -- such as Vicodin and Percocet -- because of their risk for overdose and for severe liver injury.

And there was much crying and gnashing of teeth across the NFL...

Mr. B, this is long overdue.

If you remember, my first comment on this blog was a long conversation with THS about the side effects of acetaminophen / paracetamol. Liver failure when used with alcohol and renal failure and liver failure on overdose are pretty well-known effects of the drug. Over 95% of the dose you take is taken out by the liver before it gets into your bloodstream, so of a 500 mg tablet, the effective mass of drug in your blood is only 25mg. that kind of high first-pass is a big warning flag in pharmacology. In today's climate, if that drug were a New Chemical Entity going for approval for prescription-only use, it would at least have a black box warning, and drugs with black boxes are never allowed to go Over The Counter (non-Rx).

Acetaminophen has no effect on me, and I avoid the "cets" (Percocet and Darvocet), and instead asked for Vicoprofen (hydrocodone plus ibuprofen) after my sinus surgery. Or you can always ask for the straight stuff, but that looks like drug-seeking behavior to some people. One of the reasons they adulterate the narcotic with acetaminophen or NSAIDs is to make the casual abuser sick from the side effects of the non-narcotic, but hard-core abusers can get around that because acteaminophen is easy enough to separate from hydrocodone using cold water.

There will still be plenty of options out there with the "cets" gone. The NFL will just switch over to hillbilly heroin. :D

Screw Vicodin.

If they mess with my Excedrin Migraine, I will CUT A BITCH. That is the only thing that can take me from miserable, non-functional, and very close to throwing up unless I am in a dark, cold, silent room, to being at least borderline functional.

Yeah, I would tend to agree, John, and your knowledge far exceeds my yeoman learning. I don't take acetaminophen based drugs because I put enough stress on my liver as it is.

As long as I can still get oxycodone when my back goes out I'll be fine. When I'm in severe pain it's the only thing that helps.
