That officer worked harder to get his title than she worked to get hers. If I ever had to testify before her, I would demand she call me "boss," to remind her who she works for.

sorry about the double, jim. for some reason the comment posting is really slow.

Yeah, Boxer worked hard to get all those votes from the unwashed masses. Oh, no, that was Harry Reid, wasn't it?

Reminds me of a turd we had at TBS who got all pissed because some junior officer called him "captain" as in "morning captain". He commanded all to address him as Sir and not captain so of course he was never called Sir again. Boxer is a tool.

Tools serve functions, pop. Boxer only serves herself at best.

True story: Reminds me of a rather loud, obnoxious fellow I know. An ex-Navy Captain, his co-workers always called him "Commander". This naturally didn't sit well with his pride, so he would always say "It's Captain!"...which of course only ensured that everyone made damned sure to say "Commander."
After a few weeks of this his temper boiled over, and he screamed "It's Captain, asshole!"

So of course he is now known as "Captain Asshole."

Senator Asshole has a nice ring to it too :-)

I wonder... d'you think her real annoyance comes from the general having treated her like a lady? There's a subtle reinforcement of gender roles in calling someone "sir" or "ma'am" that's absent from a plain title like "senator." She would have seen that as patronizing when it's just old-fashioned courtesy and respect.

Worse (to her) it's courtesy and respect afforded many, whereas only 100 people at a time get to call themselves US Senator. I'd ask her to get off her high horse, except that she's the horse; or part of the horse, anyway.

My salutation for her starts with a "C", ends with a "t" and has the United Nations in the middle.

"Captain Asshole"! (Still laughing)

When I worked in customer service taking phone orders, one of the first things I'd ask for was the caller's name. Every once in awhile I'd get some prick, er, doctor with a god complex who would make a point of saying, "This is DOCTOR Joe Shmo" or whatever. And I would reply, "Thank you, Doctor. My name is Mrs. _____." Hey, I worked just as hard (and for as many years) to get that title as they did to get their title!

No, she just doesn't like the military.
