What a Shame They Couldn't Vote

...her off the island. And all this time I thought she had a halo and everything ~ "Newspapers dubbed her the new Joan of Arc, the French president Nicolas Sarkozy greeted her with a hero's welcome in Paris and a special service in her honour was held at Lourdes."

Betancourt Criticized By Ex-Hostage

...But the most provocative revelation of "Out of Captivity" deals with Betancourt, a French-Colombian politician kidnapped a year before they were marched into the gulag they say she dominated.

One of the Northrop Grumman employees alleges she was haughty and self-absorbed, stole food and hoarded books, and even put their lives in danger by telling rebel guards they were CIA agents.

"I watched her try to take over the camp with an arrogance that was out of control," Keith Stansell of Bradenton told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday.

"Some of the guards treated us better than she did."

You know, I really want to say something like, how classless to start airing all these complaints, but I can't bring myself to going that far.

I suspect that these accusations are all true, if somewhat colored by resentment. These people were living a type of hell, they probably are still recovering from their experience and will be for years. I don't want to be critical of them for pointlessly trashing this pretentious woman because if I were in their shoes, living through that type of hell, I'd be hard pressed to not throttle her neck, let alone watch as she receives public adulation from people not knowing the truth.
