Yep, you keep yucking it up as you're mucking it up

President Barack Obama said he believes the global financial system remains at risk of implosion with the failure of Citigroup or AIG, which could touch off “an even more destructive recession and potentially depression.”

His remarks came in a“60 Minutes” interview in which he was pressed by Steve Kroft for laughing and chuckling several times while discussing the perilous state of the world’s economy.

“You're sitting here. And you're— you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he's sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with— I mean: explain. . .” Kroft asked at one point.

“Are you punch-drunk?” Kroft said.

“No, no. There's gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day,” Obama said, with a laugh.

Can this guy go one frickin' day, just one, with out appearing on some talk show?

The answer to your question: Obama is entirely a media creature and has confused good PR with good governance. He needs to feed the media because once they turn on him, his essential emptiness will be obvious. Our previous president owed the media nothing and could afford to ignore them.

Does this idiot have no sense? He makes a unfunny joke about Special Olympics on Leno and two days later laughs about the economic disaster he claims is the worst since the Great Depression. He's never going to make it through four years, which is good news, atleast for the country.

That assumes The Won™ won't pull the country down with him, Retread.

NJ Sue, spot on! He won the campaign by being a media creature. Obama should be making infomercials, not running the country.

I fear that he laughs because he knows he'll never feel the pain the rest of us are/will be feeling. He's one of those types who will continue to glad-hand his way through life, fooling just enough people to keep the money and praise flowing.

The "Special Olympics" joke is so much the doing of a person with a fourteen-year-old's view of the world (and there are a lot of fourteen year olds who are more mature than that). It's puerile, and it sort of sums up the whole demeanor of government right now - smirking and mugging for the camera, trying to get a laugh, but not realizing how flat the jokes are falling.

I hate to say it, but I'm beginning to fear - like, seriously fear - for the future of the country. And not even 'fear' in a "gotta buy ammunition" sense, in a "I'm not sure I want to be one of the 'survivors'" sense.

While it didn't freeze over there was a frost in Hell yesterday. In the Sunday NY Times both Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd wrote columns that weren't very positive in the least about the Prez. He loses those two it won't be pretty.

Four critical editorials including Friedman and the paper's lead editorial. That's a hard frost indeed.

NJ Sue and Ricki are right on. One of the Ace of Spades bloggers called him a "twittering nincompoop." Sounds correct to me.

Na-na-na, I won... Sooner or later reality is going to give that smirking doofus an atomic wedgie.

Obama would be smart to refrain from using the word "gallows" in any context. It might give people ideas.

I give Obama a year before he resigns due to some face-saving family mystery illness. Seriously, the guy is TOTALLY in over his head, and even a Biden presidency is starting to look good by comparison.

I see a delaying tactic. He's laughing to give himself time to think what next to say sans teleprompter...
