Sister Blogging Will Be Sparse Today

...since I'm going to a party.

The latest chapter in Pensacola's 450-year shared heritage with Spain unfolded Wednesday night with the arrival of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia.

Did you know Pensacola's America's first settlement? 1559, baby. And both the handover of Florida from Spain to the U.S. and the inauguration of Andrew Jackson as Governor happened about 50 feet in front of where I work. Coincidentally, a certain king and queen will be there this afternoon.

And I've got to get cracking before they close the streets off.

This is SO cool.

Pensacola? I thought the oldest was St. Augie?

Oh, and party hearty. Say hi to Juan and Sofie for me.

I thought Pensacola was America's oldest soft drink.

Nope. Pensacola was the FIRST. Tristan de Luna and his ships...who got all blow'd up by a Cat 4 a few short months later. St. Augustine was settled later and never blow'd up, so they get the "Oldest City" award.

And in between Pensacola and St. Augustine timewise, there was Fort Caroline, built by French Huguenots in 1562 and burned to the ground by Pedro Menendez de Aviles less than three years later (only two of the French settlers survived).

An irony to Juan Carlos's visit is that as a Bourbon his ancestors were shortly thereafter ruling FRANCE, not Spain. They ruled neither at the time of the Fort Caroline Massacre: rather, Jeanne D'Albret an Antoine de Bourbon, the parents of the future Henry IV of France, were ruling the tiny Kingdom of Navarre between France and Spain, of which what now remains is the Sovereign Co-Principality of Andorra.
