Hmmm, Tempting...

But still not quite enough to get me to move to Peru

LIMA (Reuters) - Peru's top court has ruled that workers cannot be fired for being drunk on the job, a decision that was criticized by the government on Wednesday for setting a dangerous precedent.

The Constitutional Tribunal ordered that Pablo Cayo be given his job back as a janitor for the municipality of Chorrillos, which fired him for being intoxicated at work.

The firing was excessive because even though Cayo was drunk, he did not offend or hurt anybody, Fernando Calle, one of the justices, said on Wednesday.

Although the combination of Pisco Sours and job security is awfully hard to beat.

That ruling should make working around forklift drivers real interesting.

Reminds me of the time I was working in a factory that had ILWU workers. If you don't know the ILWU, I'll just point out that according to my understanding they were one of the organizers of the first big WTO riots in Seattle several years ago, their business agent was a registered communist party member and they also helped organize independent trucker strikes. The strikes at our factory were usually violent. Cops don't care.

Anyway, one of the workers was cited by the manager because he was pissing in the corner of the factory. Even with the ILWU this is not allowed.

But the worker grieved and the union rep badgered the plant manager. The union thug demanded how the manager could know if he was pissing. The manager said, "well, I saw him urinating."

"But how do you know if it wasn't water that you saw? Did you taste it?"

I think the worker was exonerated.

Another time, business slowed down so we switched to two shifts and hired security guards to watch the place during third shift when most people weren't there. When the maintenance techs showed up to do their work on third shift they refused to show ID and shoved the security out of the way and went in. The union didn't allow them to be punished because there was no written rule that they had to follow directions of securlty guard.

I hate unions.
