500,000 People Now

The pictures on the live feed from the NBC affiliate are mesmerizing, horrifying and spectacular ~ fire showers raining down against a black sky, or molten pillars thrusting skywards against the darkness. Lord.

Plus interviews with evacuees at Qualcomm ~ to a one, calm and saying ~ like the little fellow they just interviewed ~ "Thanks. It's amazing. We have everything we need."

Contrast this with NOLA. Make fun of the Governator all you want (and I do), but his state works.

I want everyone screaming about Federal inaction during Katrina to study this one hard. There will be a quiz afterward on the separation of powers and local responsibility.

Amen, John.

The power isn't so much in the plan, but in the actual IMPLEMENTATION...of the plan. The best PLAN in the world ~ and NOLA actually had a fancy, expensive one in shiny binders and everything ~ is a waste if not put into ACTION by the local yokels.

Hell, even my lil' ol' Bangla-cola had a plan and it worked.

Exactly, Sis. I don't know how many times I've seen a plan completely and utterly ignored when it hits the fan. Usually to the detriment of the situation. And the organization.

I'm impressed with the California response; if the locals there had reacted like the LA officials, it would be even worse, methinks.

Some more on the situation.

And here's a Google map of the fire zones.

H/T to Hot Air.

Hmmmmm.

Get a load of this:

Some cops at the Qualcomm stadium found a bunch of Mexicans with a van stealing the supplies meant for the refugees.

The cheek!
