Yes it really was. I was in the USSR.

A year after that, the Lithuanians were agitating to succeed from the USSR. Moscow started playing Kung Fu movies on the state TV channels. My Lithuanian friends said that it was a veiled political threat: "remember Tien An Mien".

Sure enough, in January 1991 Gorby pulled this shit. That was the beginning of the end of the USSR - it split the country, and more importantly, it split the military.

Tien An Mien did the same thing for the PLA, it's just that the CCP has not yet gone as far down the path of reform as the CPSU. One of these days, China is going to explode.
