Who?

I didn't think I would like him at all. Until I did. And then I did, and I do, very much.

He is, ask Madame M said, the classic "blunt instrument."

I watched the DVD last week. Although my reasons for liking him are likely different from y'all's, I thought is was among the most interesting Bond movies. I'm glad to see the end of absurd and completely unbelieveble gadgets, although gadgets are fun. I'm glad the buffoonery of Moore is forever vanquished.

I thought the movie very slow and boring until I saw the DVD extras. I had no idea those stunts at the beginning were real. I thought they were typical CGI crap and completely absurd, not even within Roger Moore levels of believable. When I learned they were real, I had to go back and watch them again. Simply amazing.

But the movie was still very slow and not very interesting until after the scene with the sailboat. Usually this is the signal that the movie is over and I thought, "I'm glad that's over." But it wasn't over. Gasp.

There was some bad editing, I think some of those scenes were chopped into the movie poorly, but the final bit where the building sinks (I didn't think Venice was so deep!) made the whole thing make sense.

Clearly they needed a new Bond to start the franchise over in a totally new direction. They could not have made this movie with Brosnan, Dalton or anyone else. This movie was slow, but necessary to set up the whole rationale for subsequent movies, which I hope are less slow and boring. For that reason I liked the movie.

As for the actor, he was pretty good. More beleivably athletic than any previous Bond. Too old, though, for an agent starting his career.

I tell you what, I hadn't seen or liked a Bond since Dalton in "The Living Daylights" (I only liked him because of being Mr. Rochestor in the BBC 'Jane Eyre') and because I despise Pierce Brosnan with all my heart. TLD started off cartoonishly as well and enough was enough. Coincidentally, that's the first thing I said to Ebola and major dad as the movie started ~ "oh, thank GOD no one parachuting over the Himalayas into an rampaging ski-doo". That alone was worth putting the DVD in the player. But Craig was a huge, deeLISHee-ous surprise and you're right, Mike ~ the thing worked. My only beef was his running all over the place ~ Lord, he hoofed as much as Mel Gibson in any of the 'Lethal Weapons' and that's TOO much. But that's nitpicking.

I'm embarrassed to say I can't wait to see more of him. As Bond. I mean the next one.

I was simply thrilled with the way that they revamped the franchise nearly entirely and poked fun at themselves.

It was refreshingly unpretentious.

I like him because he's what Fleming envisioned - someone who can fit in to social circles at need, but is capable of shedding his civilization in a heartbeat and killing without mercy or remorse.

It's why I never cared for Roger Moore in the role. Bond is a government-sanctioned ASSASSIN, not a haberdasher. Nice guy? Not much.

THS - have you seen "The Matador?" If not, please direct thyself to the video store posthaste and rent it. Report back here and tell me if you still hate Pierce Brosnan. I didn't anymore after that masterful performance. Simply masterful. I shall say no more.
