People For The Ethical Treatment Of...

Roaches

GURNEE, Ill. (AP) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Six Flags Great America to scrap its Halloween-themed cockroach-eating promotion.

A spokeswoman for the animal rights organization says the contest at the amusement park's FrightFest is "gratuitously cruel."

The park in Gurnee, Ill., is joining other Six Flags parks in offering unlimited line-jumping privileges to anyone who eats a live Madagascar hissing cockroach. The bugs are up to three inches long.

They are beyond parody.

Satire is dead. And they've dug up and buggered the corpse.

Damn! And I thought only drunk Marines ate cockroaches!

I agree. It is "gratuitously cruel", but only to those who choose to watch it.

Leaving out Third World indigenous tribes, of course.

I've seen these loonies discuss the feelings of aquarium jellyfish. Yes, we did make fun of them.

I'm sure your comments were stinging, CM.

Must have left them numb.

Clearly.

Well, actually, making me think of people eating roaches is gratuitously cruel. I don't think I will ever get over the trauma. Or be able to eat chocolate-covered raisins any more.

That wasn't what they meant? Oh.

I have to comment: In 1979 on my first visit to Okinawa I was a witness to a bet between two Marines, "20 bucks if you eat that cockroach",of course the poor insect was picked up and forced into the gaping maw of a LCpl. Never will forget the fight that bug put up with it's legs holding on to the lips of that Marine, refusing to go down but down it went with a faint crunch. That stupid LCpl spent three days in sickbay. The roaches in Oki lived in the open sewers common there and were big, like 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and would keep walking even if you stepped on them.

Wait until PETA hears about the worm eating tricks taught by the USAF survival school.
