Oh

...yeah.

No joke. Rutgers is ranked. The Scarlet Knights, long a college football laughingstock, moved Sunday into The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in 30 years.

They're #23.

Somewhere, Mr. Magoo is cheering.

The oldest program in the country (IIRC). I would honestly love to see a team like Rutgers compete for the B(C)S title, but then, I'd also love to see the title game be between two teams not in the BCS...

Yup, KG - as the joke goes, they beat Princeton in the first ever college football game, and haven't won a bowl since. At least last year they went to a real bowl, and not that phony baloney Garden State Bowl.

At long last, that isn't a prop sword in the guy's hand.

Rutgers has always had a warm spot reserved for it in this Swilling sibling heart. In the mid-fifties they'd politely asked our Pater Familia to consider another venue of higher learning for the remainder of his degree work (something ugly about a racoon coat and subsequently stolen barstool ~ all spurious allegations, I'm sure) and somehow he wound up on a train to Parris Island.

It all worked out wonderfully.

I'm stunned. I was just saying to someone last week that Scarlet Knights sounds so... swishy.

Better get my emergency supplies ready.

How 'bout those Irish, THS?

That'll teach me to go to bed early; I missed the end!

I am no longer a fan of RU. The achool is dropping 6 sports from the roster to save $$ and just happened to increase the football budget about same amount. They are selling the football coach a plot of school land to build his new house that was designated as protected space for wild critters.

Cinder - they were nearly the Orange Knights, as in William the Orange, immortalized on campus as a statue named "Silent Willie." (Because he whistles at graduating virgins, in yet another variation of the old, old college jape.) It turns out that the original footballers couldn't find any suitable orange fabric, so they went with scarlet instead.

Lisa, I think the WHOLE COUNTRY went to bed! I got up early and headed out to my gypsy peddlar's tent in the park. While settin' up stuff, I started wondering if maybe something had happened we didn't see, since there were all these weird signs about....the booth across from mine had a first day cover of the Four Horsemen front and center (which I purchased immediately for major dad) and then our Schwann's guy shows up at the festival, family in tow and Notre Dame football jersey on his back. Hmmm, I thinketh unto myself. major dad popped in about three and broke the happy, HAPPY news. He said he'd been on CNN.com to see how bad the damage was and milagro upon milagro! They'd won.
