Hamas Hints at Recognition of Israel

The European Union has cut off direct aid payments to the Hamas-led Palestinian government because of its refusal to renounce violence and recognise Israel, the EU’s executive office said today.“For the time being there are no payments to or through the Palestinian authority,” European Commission spokeswoman Emma Udwin said in Brussels.

The United States has decided to suspend direct assistance to the Hamas-led Palestinian government, while increasing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians through U.N. agencies, the State Department said on Friday.

I have never understood why they call it "the Palestinian authority" - what authority? Who authorized it?
