15 Years Ago Last Night and Today

...they left stuff like this behind on the "Highway of Death"...

...for Major Dad to find.

Marine Aircraft Group-13 legend has it that our CO was in an F-18 heading north of Kuwait City, when he noticed a ton of traffic on the highway to Basra. He got a little closer, confirmed who was buggering out and called for some help.

Lots of it arrived.

Major Dad says there was tons of contraband ~ cars, trucks and military vehicles bulging with brand news TVs, unopened boxes of electronics, everything imaginable ~ the ground was littered with the contents of Kuwait City.

Wow, neat picture!

Why is Omar Sharif looting, though?

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 27, 2006 05:39 PM

He's a THOUSAND times better looking than Omar the Gap Toothed!!

And Abdul bin Major Dad isn't looting, he's looking...

I'd be careful, Bings, Major Dad may still have that dandy piece of ordinance somewhere in the junk drawer.

Posted by: Nightfly at February 27, 2006 06:22 PM

Heh, a lot of those trashed vehicles and ordnance are stashed over in the military area between Ali Al Salem Air Base and Camp Buerhing (nee' Camp Udairi). I drove by them many times. They simply cover acres of land. Never got to root around though, the site is off limits to mere tourists.

But then, Major Dad doubtless picked 'em clean in the first place.

Is that an RPG in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 27, 2006 06:49 PM

They wouldn't let me keep the good stuff but I did get a bent AK and an Iraqi map with their defensive positions marked. Got a uniform shirt and a gas mask too. Bing is jealous because there is more hair on that upper lip than he has on that shiny grape of his.

upper lip

Ohhh, so that's the front of the camel then? Silly me...

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 27, 2006 06:57 PM

That doesn't suprise me since you are obviously familiar with what the back end of a camel looks like... or was that a goat?

Posted by: major dad at February 27, 2006 07:06 PM

Don't ask, don't tell.

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at February 27, 2006 07:17 PM

Didn't and you have...

Rumor has it (THS wouldn't confirm or deny) you had to.

We monitored pilot chatter during the first strike on the column. A very interesting mission.

Posted by: Donnah at February 27, 2006 08:45 PM

There are some more ahh graphic photos, not for here though. I can imagine the chatter. We had a crew member throw down his helmet and exclaim "what a lame war" at the cease fire but a few of us said we'll be back. We had the greatest force ever; the Army to the west and two Marine Divisions and an Air Wing (I MEF) to the south we would have kicked their ass and wouldn't be in this mess now.

Now Pop; that's some bullshit. All I have are shiny knives. I want some real ordinance damn it! Meanwhile you're sitting there prepping with Hudson's list from Aliens. Damn it, pass on the lineage of weaponry, I'm still in the feudal age here. =P

For those that don't know the quote which will haunt my children's Thanksgiving day nightmares:
"I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT want to fuck with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Whoa! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks... "

Heheheheh. I was thinking of the scene from "Predator" when Arnie and the boys open up on the jungle and level about an acre's worth. Jesse Ventura with that mounted cannon blazing away... And then he just holds the trigger and lets it whine after the last round is spent. Guilty fun all around.

The movies have a hard time keeping up with reality. I remember seeing many of those "not for publishing" photos.

Yeah, what a lame war. You know, the USMC is still about 10% smaller now than then?
