Pretty Hateful
Rehnquist’s judicial philosophy was result-oriented, activist, and authoritarian. He sometimes moderated his views for prudential or pragmatic reasons, but his vote could almost always be predicted based on who the parties were, not what the legal issues happened to be. He generally opposed the rights of gays, women, blacks, aliens, and religious minorities. He was a friend of corporations, polluters, right wing Republicans, religious fundamentalists, homophobes, and other bigots.But pretty predictable, too.

Major Dad was wondering where, in his rant about Rehnquist only doing well in law school because there were no minorities, that left Sandra Day O'Conner. She came in 3d in the class or something, right?

Rehnquist was first in that class at Stanford; Sandra Day (as she then was) was third. One of my fellow students that summer at McGill asked the Chief what happened to whoever was second, graduating between them. He said he had no idea.
