Did He Yell "Check!"?
It seems Gary Kasparov was attacked with a chess board after a meeting to organize youth activists. Via the Blogfaddah, who rightly points out the potential, and shocking, of course, connection to Putin.
But my theory is that the 'fan' perhaps looked at the autograph and felt...rooked.

In the young man's defense, I hear Kasparov the Friendly Ghost accused him of being a closet queen. Or maybe that was just bishopful thinking and Kasparov is merely a pawn in Putin's latest gambit.
Let me just add en passant that I don't want to hear any Karpoving about the quality of the jokes. It's tough Fishering for a good punchline when your brain is going Spasskyic.

Among chessplaying circles this is rather an interesting story, since Kasparov is actually popular enough back home (certain circles notwithstanding) to credibly challenge Putin. (Perhaps one reason why we won the Cold War - in in USSR they had no real rock stars, and had to use chessplayers as major celebrities instead.) But yes, Garry is an odd duck: famously tough in tournament play, and intelligent outside his chosen field (no given among the chess community); but prone to petulance and ego.
But have you all been following the sad story of Bobby Fischer? Mentally speaking, he's down the exchange with no compensation.
